Ghada Amer Egyptian, b. 1963
Born in Cairo in 1963, Ghada Amer moved to France with her family, completing her studies in Paris and Nice. She was awarded an MFA from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Nice, and began exhibiting her works in the 1990s.
Amer is recognised as a painter, illustrator, sculptor, as well as a performance and installation artist. Her works focus around the depiction of female sexuality, as well as notions of cultural identity and religious fundamentalism. Reworking pornographic images through delicate embroidery, she uses a traditionally feminine medium to subvert the associations we attach to both method and subject.
Amer lives and works in New York City.
