Anthony Caro British, 1924-2013
Overview
Anthony Caro was born in 1924 in New Malden, England. He worked as an assistant to Henry Moore in the 1950s after studying sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London.
Caro changed the course of twentieth century sculpture with his abstract work, creating assemblages of metal from rusted steel, bronze, lead and wood, as well as found objects. One of his most radical innovations was to place his sculptures directly on the floor rather than plinths, as he did in the pivotal show at Whitechapel Gallery in 1963 which brought his work to public attention for the first time.
He was knighted in 1987 and received the Order of Merit in May 2000.
He died in London in 2013.
