Günther Uecker German, b. 1930
Günther Uecker was born in 1930, in Wendorf, Germany. He studied painting at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee and continued his artistic education at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. During the 1950s, Uecker became interested in philosophies that reflected simplicity and purity, and began to experiment with his own repetitive rituals- such as hammering for extended periods of time. In 1961, Uecker became a member of the Zero art group founded by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene.
Inspired by the Kinetic Art movement, Uecker utilises light, technology, and optical illusions in his relief work. He is best known for his nail art that encourages viewer participation, positioning nails so that the surface of the artwork seems to move. The light and shadow patterns shift in appearance according to the spectator’s viewpoint.
Uecker lives and works in Germany and Switzerland.
