Rudolf Stingel Italian, b. 1956

Overview

Born in Italy, Stingel rose to fame in the late 1980s for monochromatic paintings that were reminiscent of Gerhard Richter’s squeegee works. During the 1990s, Stingel began investigating the relationship between paint and architecture, completely transforming the walls and floors of exhibition spaces with carpet.

Stingel’s work continues to analyse and dismantle the idea of artistic process. He is known for interactive installations that use unusual materials such as Styrofoam and cast polyurethane, or commercially produced aluminium panels that viewers can add their own marks to. Although untouched by the artist, these works remain under his authorship, questioning the integrity of a creation. He also makes oil paintings that vary in style from abstraction to photorealism, highlighting the artist’s perception as an unreliable source of truth.

He lives and works in New York and Merano, Italy.
